Ruling it out as a legitimate
commercial text message
Part of the point of SOS SMS on Grumbletext is to
stop text messaging going the same way as email - i.e. being drowned
in a ton of very dodgy spam and scams. There is a growing
commercial text industry out there which provides many people with
fun, rewards, real prizes (though not usually particularly big ones
- a good thing).
Legitimate commercial
text marketing comes in many forms but if you've read
about junk text scams on this site and figure the text you've
received probably isn't one then there's
really only one question you need to be able to answer
Has the text come from a service you know you
subscribed to? i.e. did you ask to receive it and therefore know
where it has come from? And is it offering you what you expected to
be offered...
If you can answer a definite yes to the above,
then it is a legitimate commercial text - probably...
A note of caution about
brands: merely recognizing a brand in a text is not at
all good enough - because it is exactly the tactic which some of the
scammers employ - for example, a particular text tried to look as
though it was associated with Sony - of course it wasn't as a glance
at its laughable website revealed.
So, a commercial text may or may not conform strictly to ICSTIS's
code of practice but the critical thing you really need to know is - you
know what it is and you know why you're getting it...
The mere fact that you are on this website is
therefore a strong indication that
you are not in receipt of a legitimate commercial text message.
