Lots of normal sane people fall
for these scams.. why?
My wife got her just junk text scam out of the
blue the other day - she knows I operate this site, and yes she was
confused, but she had no idea it was a scam. It was the 'BPQ
voicemail' message scam, which is not at all obvious as it doesn't
appear to offer you money/prizes etc.
Most people respond to these things at least once
and in my opinion these are the reasons why:
1) People
instinctively feel that their mobile phone is 'private' - it's
not in the phone book, you give your number out personally to people
- it's your personal space because you carry it about with you all
the time
2) Junk text scams are simply newer and
less widely known about in general than email coupled to
1) above, scams of any kind are always easiest to fall for before
people in general have heard about them; there is no 'check with a
friend/word of mouth' effect - for example, most people now
recognise the "letter from Nigeria" scam on email, but
people used to fall for it regularly (and that involves a LOT of
money)
3) Everyone knows it costs money to send
a text message - it's not free to send like email, and
therefore people don't make the connection; they feel they are the
sole, special, intended recipient
4) You often receive these messages when
you are particularly susceptible to responding to them -
e.g. Friday nights - this works particularly well for any of the
dating services because the practice of flirting via text message
amongst normal, particularly younger, individuals is very prevalent
- it seems normal - maybe "someone you know" is indeed
trying to get hold of you (but they aren't)
