Ringtones and logos - cause a lot of problems but are they scams?
Ringtones and logos are typically delivered and billed to you using premium rate text messages, typically costing £1.50 per message.
There are 2 main problems with them:
1) whether they will actually work on your particular model of phone is not something that ringtone companies are typically veyr worried abou
2) they are heavily advertised, in particular on TV, and you are mostly given the impression that you are requesting just one ringtone whereas if you read the small print at the bottom of the screen, and mange to decipher it, you are actually subscribing to get one or more of these things per week, which is not what many people want
Luckily, if you actually get into a 'subscription' situation like this then the universal STOP command is normally effective in stopping them.
Becuase of the recent changes in the regulatory environment (see 1) ICSTIS TO GET GREATER POWERS TO TACKLE UNSCRUPULOUS FIRMS and 2) Ofcom recommends measures to improve Premium Rate regulation in the UK ) your problems with these ringtone subscriptions are probably going to decline quite rapidly.
Are they scams? That's probably a matter of opinion, although I would argue that they are misleadingly advertised and might even be challenged for 'unfair contract terms' if it needed to get that far.
