What you achieve by reporting premium rate scams here on Grumbletext and to ICSTIS, the regulator

Reporting on Grumbletext:

By reporting any premium rate scams you receive on Grumbletext, you'll get revenge on the people who sent/communicated them to you. If you post the communication you received (text/voicemail/TV or print advert) up on the site, then lots of people quickly find us in Google for relevant searches.

The more people find us before they respond to these texts, the less money they waste in doing so, and therefore the less money the people responsible for sending them make.

It's that simple, and you don't have to spend long reading peoples messages here to work out that this really works.

By the way, you may not be aware that you can report automatically on this site, and formally to the regulator below, via text message. When you get a spam text, simply forward it to our number 07810 83 83 83 (normal text cost) and edit it so that it starts with the word SPAM. It'll get posted up here and automatically forwarded to ICSTIS.

Reporting your complaint to ICSTIS, the premium rate regulator:

When you post your message up on Grumbletext, your report of the premium rate communication you received and what you think about it, we automatically prepare you a copy of your complaint which you have the option to send to ICSTIS, the Premium Rate regulator.

ICSTIS has the power to fine the companies who send these things out and they do so.

Having said that, because virtually nobody has ever heard of ICSTIS (their own research revealed this) in my opinion they rather underestimate how much of this stuff is out there - so when you get the option, please launch off that complaint to them. Their fines broadly reflect the number of people they think have fallen victim.

That said, significant progress has been made recently and I believe ICSTIS have now successfully argued for, and received, the upgrades to their regulatory powers which they must have in order to do the job properly - see 1) ICSTIS TO GET GREATER POWERS TO TACKLE UNSCRUPULOUS FIRMS and 2) Ofcom recommends measures to improve Premium Rate regulation in the UK.

If a lot more people find ICSTIS, and lodge formal complaints to them, via us, than in the past when no-one knew about ICSTIS and we didn't exist as a conduit, then I believe we should see ICSTIS's impact on rogue premium rate businesses increase significantly in 2005.
